We've done alot of complimentary Search Engine Optimization analysis in the last few weeks, and we keep seeing the same issues over and over again. Here are 10 tips EVERY business owner needs to be aware that are easy to implement.
A complete guide to search engine optimization would be book-length, and would be out of date as soon as it was published, but here are several tips for building a website with search engine optimization in mind: # *Content is king. Provide valuable information, lots of it, ensure that is relevant to your subject and that it contains popular keywords and phrases in relation to your topic or industry. # Keep your site fresh. While old content can rank well for years, adding fresh content regularly not only helps to create "stickiness" (return visits) but also acts as a signal to search engines your site isn't one of the millions of abandoned sites that litter the Internet. Some believe it acts as a signal of relevancy to search engines. # Text Navigation. Use text navigation on your site, and use the keyword phrases you have selected as the links. That means that in addition to having that pretty image navigation bar at the top of the page, have some text navigation somewhere on your site also. # Unique Headings. Make sure that each of your pages has unique Heading i.e. none of your pages should have the same name or talk about the same subject. # Heading Tags. It is important to use heading tags (H1, H2, etc) bolding and italicizing in your content. Begin by adding a Level 1 Heading (H1) to your page with the keywords or a keyword phrase for that page. Add lower level Headings (Heading 2 - Heading 6) and make sure to repeat your keyword throughout the text. # Formatting Text. Use bolding and italicizing for emphasizing key points, preferably words that are related to queries you wish to rank well for. # Link to the Most Important Pages from every page. Organize your navigation according to the importance of your keyword phrases. If you break your site into many pages, link to the most important pages from every page of your site, and link to the other pages from section header pages and the site map. # Inbound Links. The more "right" sites you can have linking to you, the higher you will be ranked in some of the major engines. In fact, a site without inbound links is liable to never do well. Also link out to other sites in your genre, bearing in mind that not all links are created equal - beware of linking to websites that have been banned or penalized by search engines. eg. BBB, Chamber of Commerce, Yellow Pages, Yahoo Directory Service, Dmoz.org # PDF File Links Make sure that when you link to a PDF (or any other link) you label the hyperlink with descriptive words. For instance instead of making the hyperlink just say "Click Here", instead try having a descriptive hyperlink such as "Download the latest SEO Tips Here" or something that uses those key words the Search Engines to index for your site. # Black Hat Techniques. * Avoid questionable practices in attempts to create better SEO, as major search engines are very aware of these techniques and will blacklist your website. eg.
